SACRAMENTO - State Sen. Gil Cedillo is trying to shine some light on a shocking but little known episode in U.S. history. He faces an uphill battle.
The L.A. Democrat is the author of a bill that would require public junior high and high schools to teach students about the deportation of about 2 million Latinos, including 400,000 Californians, to Mexico during the Great Depression.

The 1994 Department of Finance study placed taxes paid by illegal immigrants at between $1 billion and $3.4 billion a year with a median of $2.2 billion, roughly equal to the $2.4 billion in direct public costs they incurred... All in all, therefore, it's probably close to a fiscal wash. Schwarzenegger is correct in asserting that illegal immigrants aren't responsible for the state's budget crisis. Politicians should look in the mirror if they're looking for scapegoats.

If legislators want to reduce illegal immigration, they should press Congress to reform the nation's legal immigration system. Their mean- spirited bills will accomplish nothing.

In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, California believed it could solve its economic crisis by deporting 2 million Mexican and Mexican American residents - including many US-born citizens. It did absolutely nothing to ameliorate the Depression - you cannot exclude your way to prosperity - but nevertheless the deportations went on throughout the decade.
