FOR RELEASE: June 29, 1999 RULES COMMITTEE APPOINTS RICHARD ALATORRE TO UI APPEALS BOARD SACRAMENTO--The Rules Committee of the California State Senate has appointed retiring Los Angeles City Council member Richard Alatorre to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. Alatorre, 56, served in the state Assembly from 1973 to 1985 where he was a member of the Assembly Labor and Assembly Employment and Public Services committees. Alatorre was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1985. Announcing the appointment, Senate President pro Tem John Burton, Chairman of the Rules Committee said, "I've known and worked with Richard Alatorre for more than 20 years. He has years of experience with the issues dealt with by the board, comes highly recommended by labor and business, and I know he will provide excellent service to the people of California." Burton also thanked Marilyn Isenberg, who had been temporarily serving as the Rules Committee appointee to the board, for her work and said he was confident the state would soon find another way to utilize her outstanding abilities. Alatorre's appointment is effective July 1. His term on the Unemployment Appeals Board runs until 2003. The board grants or denies unemployment insurance benefits that have been appealed. ###
